Caroline Emmett, PhD, MBA, has always had one foot in the sciences and the other in the arts. She was born in London, England, and completed an A Level in Fine Art before studying Biology at the University of Leicester.

                        

While at University, Caroline’s father was diagnosed with brain cancer. He passed away shortly before she graduated, leaving her with a compelling need to more fully understand the disease that had taken her father’s life. This led her to study the fundamental properties of astrocytes, the origin of her father’s tumor. She received her Ph.D. in Neurobiology in 1987.

                        

Throughout her early career, Caroline utilized various imaging technologies that allowed her to see the vast array of cellular shapes and structures that comprise the brain. Over the last few years, she found herself drawn back to these images, not as a neuroscientist but as an artist. Her fascination with the brain was rekindled with a new appreciation of the beauty found throughout the nervous system. She felt inspired to turn these elements into jewelry; jewelry inspired by an exquisite brain.
